Ramayana and Mahabharata are two epics that we have grown up reading. One is about the morally upright prince Ram, who gives up his kingdom and goes on exile to fulfil his father's wishes. Later, he even sends his wife on exile to uphold dharma! The other epic is about dynastic feuds and war for inheritance. They say one book is idealistic while the other is very realistic. There are different interpretations of dharma in both these books. Devdutt Pattanaik, who is the leading mythologist of India, does a comparative analysis of these epics and presents an interesting narrative of how Ramayana and Mahabharata are similar (and dissimilar). I loved the book. In his own style, Pattanaik gifts us several unknown facets of the two epics and helps us understand our mythological stories better.
